This taught programme is provided jointly by the Bristol Institute for Transfusion Sciences and the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (formerly Pathology and Microbiology), University of Bristol.

Purpose:

Suitable for UK and overseas scientists from clinical and non-clinical backgrounds wishing to improve their employment prospects by extending their expertise in the laboratory aspects of stem cell and solid organ transplantation and blood transfusion. Also suitable for recent graduates of any biological discipline wishing to acquire relevant research training before undertaking a PhD. Provides a sound basis for a career in the biomedical laboratory or biomedical research. The course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Scientists.

 

Programme Description:

The course aims to develop your interest, knowledge and understanding of the theory, practical techniques and research methodology relating to the clinical sciences underpinning transplantation and transfusion medicine. It consists of four taught Units

A - The Principles of Transfusion and Transplantation Sciences

B - The Application of Transfusion and Transplantation Sciences

C - Transfusion and Transplantation Sciences in Action (practical lab work)

D - Research Methods and Biostatistics

and an experimental Research Project

 

PGC - Units A and B only, PGD Units A, B, C and D only.

 

Programme Format and Assessment:

Lectures, tutorials, laboratory practicals, site visits, lab-based research project. Assessment by coursework, examination, project thesis, oral presentation.

 

Student Destinations:

Recent graduates have started careers as Clinical Scientists or Biomedical Scientists with the NHS, undertaken PhDs, or received promotion within their own organisation.

 

Funding:

PT students are normally supported by their employer. FT students can be self-funded but often obtain scholarships from their own countries. This course is recognised by the Department for International Development (DFID) under the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme. Students from developing Commonwealth countries meeting the Scheme criteria can apply for funding from this source. Further information on the DFID Scheme can be found by clicking here. Entry Requirements:

Minimum 2:1 in a biological science degree, medicine, dentistry, or equivalent overseas qualification. Non-degree qualifications may be considered if proof of relevant laboratory experience and other academic achievement is provided.

PT students are normally employed, and supported by their employer to carry out a research project in their home laboratory.

 

IELTS: 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each part.
